A missing kayaker on Lake Michigan was found dead on Wednesday.
The kayaker was identified as James Arthur Bottorff III, a 26-year-old from the Leelanau County area who now lives in Wilmington, North Carolina, according to the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office.
On Tuesday, Leelanau County 911 received a call regarding an overturned kayak on West Grand Traverse Bay in Peshawbestown. Emergency services were dispatched and arrived on scene within three minutes, according to the sheriff's office.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Witnesses said they saw a man about 200 yards offshore and crews searched until 8:45 p.m., when it was deemed unsafe for responders to continue searching due to visibility and water conditions.
The search resumed Wednesday when Bottorff was found around 11 a.m.
"The Sheriff's Office extends its condolences to the family of Mr. Bottorff and would also like to thank all of the many agencies that assisted in this incident," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
