In the United States, a woman's ZIP code significantly influences her health outcomes, especially for Black mothers and their infants. By 2025, over one-third of U.S. counties will lack essential maternity services, including hospitals with obstetric care, birth centers, OB-GYNs, or certified nurse midwives, often requiring women to travel an hour or more to access care. Delays in treatment during emergencies can be fatal. Black women face disproportionate risks during childbirth, being 2.6 times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related complications. Systemic issues such as racial bias in healthcare, economic disparities, and limited access to quality facilities contribute to these disparities, particularly in rural Black communities and low-income urban areas. Postpartum challenges are also critical. Black mothers experience higher rates of postpartum depression and often lack adequate mental health screening and support, especially in areas without sufficient healthcare infrastructure.
