Study Finds Adults Inhaling Up to 68,000 Microplastic Particles Daily
A recent study published in PLOS One reveals that adults may be inhaling up to 68,000 microplastic particles daily from indoor and outdoor air, far exceeding previous estimates. Conducted by researchers at the University of Toulouse, the research focused on microplastics sized between 1 and 10 micrometers, which are capable of penetrating deep into lung tissue. Unlike earlier studies that examined larger particles, this investigation highlights the greater health risks posed by smaller microplastics. Using Raman spectroscopy to analyze air samples from homes and vehicle cabins, the team found median concentrations of 528 particles per cubic meter indoors and 2,238 particles per cubic meter inside cars, with 94% of particles measuring less than 10 micrometers. Integrating these findings with existing data, the researchers estimate that an average adult inhales approximately 3,200 particles in the 10 to 300 micrometer range daily, and an alarming 68,000 particles within the 1 to 10 micrometer range. The inhalation of microplastics is associated with potential health effects such as oxidative stress, immune system impairment, and damage to other organs. Researchers also pointed out ...
