AI Enhances Detection of Breast Cancers Between Routine Screenings
Advancements in AI technology have demonstrated promising potential in early breast cancer detection, even between routine screening intervals. Recent research published in the journal Radiology indicates that artificial intelligence algorithms can identify nearly 33% of breast cancers during periods when patients are not scheduled for screening, utilizing sophisticated 3D mammography methods. This capability could significantly lower the incidence of interval cancers—those diagnosed after a normal mammogram and before the next screening appointment. Notably, AI systems showed heightened effectiveness in detecting more advanced tumors that, if identified earlier, might have remained localized at a less severe stage. According to Manisha Bahl, PhD, of Massachusetts General Hospital, the findings suggest that AI tends to identify more aggressive or rapidly growing cancers, as well as some that might be overlooked by radiologists due to their size or subtle features.
