FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) -- As the political debate over artificial intelligence intensifies, the lawyer for the Tennessee woman wrongly accused of bank fraud in Fargo is warning about the harm that improper use of A.I. can do.
Angela Lipps was arrested in July 2025 after an arrest warrant was issued in Fargo.
A police investigator in West Fargo who used A.I. facial recognition technology to find leads targeted Lipps.
But she had never been to North Dakota and did not match the physical description of the suspect on the surveillance videos.
The charges against her were dropped last Christmas Eve and she was released after six months behind bars.
"I'd say the issue of A.I. is becoming more and more prevalent. As these tools get more sophisticated, more widely used, cheaper, more accessible you're going to see more and more of these issues arise and we're hoping that this lawsuit and Angela's story serves as a reminder of how to use these tools responsibly and the harm that can be caused when law enforcement uses these tools for purposes they are not designed for," said Eric Rice, an attorney for Lipps.
