Sunday morning, I had come out of the bedroom and into our sitting area when Lou said quietly, “Come look.”
She was standing near the window looking into the backyard.
Sitting on top of our backyard fence gate was a bird that looked like a hawk. I took Lou’s phone and snapped a picture. Then I started recording a video. Before long, we realized there were two of them.
A little research told us they were red-shouldered hawks.
For the next ten minutes or so, Lou and I just watched.
At first we were whispering, almost like we were afraid we might disturb them. Then it occurred to us that they couldn’t see us standing behind the window. As far as they knew, nobody was watching.
So we stopped whispering.
The hawks seemed to be having themselves a pretty good Sunday morning.
They flew from place to place. They moved around each other. One would land and the other would follow. At times, it almost looked like they were playing.
Then a squirrel appeared out of what seemed like nowhere.
Playtime was over.
The chase was on.
The squirrel took off across the field, and the last we saw of our two visitors, they were in pursuit.
Immediately, I thought about The Lion King.
