The Bahamas government must address the claims made by the New Providence Junkanoo Committee, which falsely asserts authority over the national parade. The committee has no legal power to prevent individuals or groups from taking part in Junkanoo festivities across the country. Recent discussions about new legislation aim to recognize Junkanoo as a national cultural treasure owned collectively by Bahamian citizens and to enhance its management. In response, the JCNP announced a suspension of participation, particularly attempting to bar groups from participating in the Emancipation Day celebrations in Fox Hill. Such assertions of authority are unfounded and should be dismissed.
