BlackDoctor CEO Akinwole ‘Aki’ Garrett Urges Men to ‘Lock In’ on Their Health
When it comes to the Black men community, we often hear about building wealth, advancing careers, and creating a legacy. BlackDoctor CEO Aki Garrett believes our health deserves that same level of attention.
I spoke with Garrett at CultureCon in Brooklyn, where he represented BlackDoctor and participated in a conversation titled "Reclaiming Black Health: Who Gets to Be Healthy?"
Garrett described BlackDoctor as a platform providing the Black community with health information, practical tools, and opportunities to engage with wellness through real-life experiences.
"We're looking to close the health gap so that our community can really thrive and be as healthy as possible," Garrett tells Men's Journal.
When I asked what message he wanted Black men to hear, Garrett did not hesitate. "We really got to lock in on our health," he said. "We've got to put the fear aside and start to go to our primary care physicians and start to seek help, both mental and physical."
His advice includes knowing important numbers such as blood pressure and blood sugar rather than waiting until symptoms appear.
