This development follows a request from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who urged the Justice Department to examine high-ranking Obama officials after declassified documents surfaced, which she argues challenge the administration's conclusion that Russia meddled in the 2016 race.
In a July report, Gabbard accused former officials of manipulating and concealing information from the public, describing their actions as part of a "treasonous conspiracy" concerning the Russia investigation.
Subsequently, Bondi announced the creation of a DOJ "strike force" tasked with reviewing Gabbard's disclosures and exploring legal avenues for further action. The grand jury's role includes issuing subpoenas and potentially bringing criminal charges if warranted.
