In 2023, tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson gained widespread attention and sparked online discussions after undergoing a plasma exchange procedure involving his 17-year-old son, aiming to reverse the aging process. Recent scientific findings from Biersdorf shed light on why such approaches might be effective, albeit with important considerations.
A new study published in the journal Aging investigates how certain components found in young human blood serum can rejuvenate skin tissues, but only when bone marrow cells are involved. Researchers utilized a co-culture model that simulates human blood circulation, combining three-dimensional skin and bone marrow tissues.
The study revealed that young blood serum alone does not directly rejuvenate skin cells. Instead, it activates bone marrow cells to produce proteins that facilitate skin regeneration, boost collagen synthesis, and diminish cellular aging. Notably, researchers identified 55 proteins secreted by bone marrow in response to young serum, with seven specifically associated with enhanced cell renewal and energy production.
These findings underscore the pivotal role of bone marrow as a communication hub that translates blood-bo...
