Breeze Airways, an airline that provides direct flights to and from underserved markets, began service from Trenton-Mercer Airport (TTN) this week, marking its inaugural flight between Charleston, S.C., and Mercer County.
The inaugural Breeze Airways flight from Charleston International Airport arrived at Trenton-Mercer Airport at about 4 p.m. on Sept. 20. Mercer County Executive Dan Benson was on hand to greet passengers of the inaugural flight and to celebrate the launch of the new service.
Breeze, based in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, first announced plans to serve Trenton in June as part of a fall and winter expansion.
With the demise of Spirit Airlines in May, discount airlines are scrambling to compete for the frugal traveler. Breeze, which also flies out of Newark Liberty International Airport and Atlantic City, is competing against discount carrier Allegiant, which also flies out of Trenton-Mercer and Atlantic City.
