Mecklenburg was terminated from Senate committee role by Dick Durbin over misconduct allegations, redacted grand jury transcripts
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Assistant U.S. Attorney Sheri Mecklenburg has retired, effective Thursday, ABC7 Chicago has learned.
Mecklenburg is the prosecutor at the center of the "Broadview Six" scandal.
The "Broadview Six" case was dismissed after the U.S. Attorney's Office admitted making mistakes with the grand jury.
Mecklenburg's retirement was announced in a court filing Thursday.
The filing notes her retirement allows her to share information about the case, without being fired or otherwise disciplined.
As the ABC7 I-Team reported in May, days before the criminal trial of the remaining "Broadview Six" members was supposed to start, U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros dismissed all charges after U.S. District Judge April Perry criticized actions by prosecutors.
In May, the ABC7 I-Team obtained a copy of unsealed court testimony that was closed to the public, where Judge Perry raised the possibility of "prosecutorial misconduct" in the case.
