Brownsburg Community School Corp. buses will run on a new three-tier schedule starting in the 2027-28 school year, under a transportation overhaul the school board approved unanimously Sept. 14.
The change, paired with an expansion of the district’s parent responsibility zones approved the same night, is expected to save the district about $2 million — more than half of the $3.8 million in cuts BCSC must make for 2027-28 as part of a larger, three-year, $7.9 million reduction plan driven by state legislation, including Senate Enrolled Act 1.
Assistant Superintendent for Operations Shane Hacker told the board the district currently runs a modified two-tier bus system. Under three-tier routing, a single driver would typically handle one elementary, one middle and one high school route each morning and afternoon, cutting the total number of routes — and drivers — needed districtwide.
Hacker said the shift would require at least 60 minutes, and in some cases up to 80 minutes, between start times at each school level to give drivers enough time to complete a route, return to the community and start the next one.
