History in Greensboro
When the Hurricanes moved to North Carolina before the 1997-98 season, construction had just begun on the Lenovo Center, formerly known as the PNC Arena, in Raleigh, which would not be finished for another two years. In the meantime, the Hurricanes played their games about 70 miles away in Greensboro.
Those two seasons in Greensboro marked the Hurricanes' first playoff appearance. In the 1998-99 season, the Hurricanes finished as Southeast Division champions. During the playoffs, the Hurricanes won their first home game 3-2 in overtime against the Boston Bruins. However, the Hurricanes eventually lost the series in six games.
The last game in Greensboro was a 4-3 double-overtime loss to the Bruins on April 30, 1999, and the Hurricanes moved to Raleigh permanently the next season.
