Celebrating the Life of Jim Smith: Community Member and Car Enthusiast Passes Away at 80
Obituary: Remembering James John Smith, 80, of Covington Township James John Smith, a beloved resident of Covington Township, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, at Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Scranton. Born in Scranton on November 13, 1944, he was the son of the late Paul William and Ann (Strazyk) Smith. A graduate of South Scranton Catholic High School in 1962, Jim furthered his education at Technical School. Throughout his career, he contributed to the Scranton Times-Tribune and worked in advertising for COLTS. An active member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, he also participated in the Hot Rod Association and the Scranton Ski Club. Jim cherished his farm in Covington Township and enjoyed hosting picnics and gatherings with friends. A passionate car enthusiast, he had lifelong ties to drag racing and proudly drove his purple 1949 Oldsmobile, affectionately named the Pennsylvania Peanut. He was a fan of rock and roll music, especially fond of attending The Rolling Stones concerts. Known for his vibrant personality, Jim easily made friends wherever he went.
