Five people were displaced by a house fire that started in the early morning hours of Monday.
The residents of the split-level single-family home on the 12900 block of Valleywood Drive near Wheaton High School were asleep when the fire started and alerted by smoke alarms.
They got out in time before the fire spread, causing damage to the second floor and the attic.
The fire was allegedly caused by a discarded cigarette outside the building. Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly; the damage is estimated at about $120,000. No injuries were reported, the fire department said.
