Cincinnati Faces Criticism Over Police Handling of Downtown Brawl and Discrimination Lawsuit Against Police Chief
The Cincinnati Police Department is under scrutiny following the recent street brawl in downtown Cincinnati on July 25 and allegations of workplace discrimination against Police Chief Teresa Theetge. The incident, which was captured on video showing multiple individuals assaulting a man and a woman being knocked unconscious, has sparked public outrage and official condemnation.
In addition to the violent incident, Chief Theetge is facing a lawsuit from several officers accusing her of discriminatory practices. Filed in May, the lawsuit alleges that Theetge favored minority and female officers in promotions and assignments, allegedly implementing a race-based quota system. The lawsuit states that 79% of minority lieutenants and 89% of female lieutenants received preferred assignments in 2023, compared to only 44% of white male lieutenants.
