Coast jury needs little time to convict karate coach in sexual battery of teen

A Jackson County karate instructor was sentenced to 90 years in prison Wednesday after a jury deliberated less than 30 minutes on a host of sexual battery charges.

Michael Shane Steiner, 48, of Pascagoula, was convicted of three counts of sexual battery by a person in a position of trust or authority, and three counts of exploitation of a child. Following the jury verdict, Circuit Court Judge Keith Miller sentenced Steiner to serve 90 years in custody of Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Due to the nature of his crimes, the sentence shall be served day-for-day, without the hope of early release or parole. Steiner must also register as a convicted sex offender for life. The verdict followed a two-day trial that was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Bill Barrett and CJ Winship.
