Colorado Springs police now using AI to answer non-emergency calls
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Colorado Springs police is now using an artificial intelligence system to assist with non-emergency calls that they have been testing for months.
AI agent named Sarah
The AI agent is named Sarah. Police said they tested their systems and had Sarah take calls since April. There were four testing days in which CSPD had Sarah take calls for a total of 54 hours. The system was able to address 49% of non-emergency calls in that period without rerouting them. Police expect AI to reduce response times.
According to police, it is an Axon AI call system. Police said it asks questions about the caller’s situation, how much damage may have been caused, and what the next steps are. Police said callers can still request a real person.
Police said the Axon AI call system can keep records, transcribe calls, and translate dozens of languages to streamline and quicken the response.
CSPD Deputy Chief John Coke said non-emergency calls were traditionally answered by the same group of call takers.
