The inaugural 'Buy Back the Block' event took place on August 2nd, drawing a sizable crowd to the neighborhoods around Carver Avenue, Fourth Street, and MLK Avenue. This community gathering aimed to raise awareness about the urgent need for positive change following recent gun-related violence incidents, including a tragic shooting on June 24 that claimed the life of a 17-year-old. Vendors set up along the closed streets, offering various activities and information from 11 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. Organizer Don Taylor emphasized the importance of engaging the youth and encouraging them to learn from local vendors. Attendees participated in a raffle with cash prizes after submitting their names. Interim Mayor Shawn Lassiter highlighted the event as a significant step toward community renewal, stating, 'These young people represent our future.'
