Mortensen took over as deputy chief earlier this year after
Ramsay was fired on Jan. 20
. Sheriff Terry Meidinger then retired May 31, and appointed Mortensen to the interim role starting June 1.
The minutes from the May 19, Board of Pembina County Commissioners meeting summarized a statement made by Meidinger. It said, “Mortensen has the respect of the whole department, and in his taking over the position of chief deputy, he has caught on to everything really well and has been doing a good job.”
According to Ramsay’s personnel file, which the Grand Forks Herald received in late April, he was accused of four wrongdoings: wage theft, sharing an evidence photo of a nude woman in the office, making false statements about coworkers and other behavior.
