San Antonio's CPS Energy is pioneering a novel approach to utilize natural gas more sustainably through Texas's inaugural pyrolysis-based turquoise hydrogen pilot project. Collaborating with Modern Hydrogen from Washington State, the utility is exploring pyrolysis technology that removes carbon emissions from natural gas prior to distribution. Although currently producing only enough for approximately 100 homes at peak capacity, this initiative marks Texas's first such experiment. The process yields low-carbon turquoise hydrogen suitable for residential and industrial applications, with the residual solid carbon repurposed into asphalt, representing a significant step toward cleaner energy solutions.
