RUSSELLVILLE — Tarus Davis rushed for 259 yards and scored five touchdowns, all in the second half, to help Russellville knock off Muscle Shoals 43-35 on Thursday.
It was the first time the two teams met on the varsity football field since 2013, and it was a key AHSAA Class 5A, Region 7 battle.
“Tarus is just a special player,” said Russellville coach Daryl Higgins. “The offensive line really came off the ball and opened holes for him. This was just a great high school game tonight.”
Davis, a senior, rushed 29 times, including the final play of the game. With the Golden Tigers leading 37-35 and trying to run out the clock, he got the handoff with six seconds remaining. As he did multiple times Thursday, he found a cutback lane and sprinted to the endzone as time expired.
“I was just trying to end the game quick when I saw the hole open up,” Davis said. “The whole team just had a different attitude in the second half. We knew we didn’t start as fast as we should have so we just turned it on in the second half.”
