Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) suggested that the federal government should regulate the internet to make Americans less likely to support President Donald Trump or similar political leaders in the future.
Appearing Sunday on the “I’ve Had It” podcast, Murphy argued that government intervention is necessary to combat the loneliness and powerlessness he believes have driven Americans toward Trump.
Murphy discussed the argument behind his book, “Crisis of the Common Good,” warning that the country will remain “stuck” with leaders like Trump unless the government attempts to manipulate the conditions influencing voters.
“Those are the two things I think Americans are going through right now,” Murphy said.
“They don’t feel powerful at all, and they feel lonely.
“And so, government should build a set of rules in which people feel more powerful — that’s why the minimum wage is so important — and people feel so more connected.
“That’s why, you know, rebuilding healthy institutions in your town should be a project that government is involved in.”
