Over the course of Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel series has surpassed expectations from both critics and fans. Nonetheless, a noticeable shortcoming emerges early in this third Dexter spin-off, one that future episodes would benefit from addressing.
Reintroducing David Zayas as Angel Batista from Miami Metro Homicide was a brilliant creative choice, despite his limited appearances initially. His role has expanded significantly in Dexter: Resurrection; however, he faces the challenge of pursuing Dexter without the assistance of other original characters who could have provided valuable support.
In season 1, episode 3, "Backseat Driver," Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) and Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee) make brief cameos. They arrive at a Miami bar to bid farewell to Batista upon learning of his retirement to resolve some unresolved issues.
Rather than delve deeper into Batista’s goals, Quinn and Masuka accept his decision too readily. In the original series, Quinn would have probed further, potentially motivating him to assist Batista in uncovering Dexter’s identity as the Bay Harbor Butcher. Masuka, with his signature humor, would have been a welcome companion.
