Game 1 – Maine East (0-4) at Maine West (0-4):
When: 6:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 18
Why?: I know, you are staring at the 0-4 records and thinking he’s crazy. Hear me out, though. Maine West was born out of Maine East in 1959 and the two teams are longtime rivals located just a short 4.4 miles apart. West owns the all-time series lead, 34-10, and the Warriors have won 13 straight. Each team is looking for a breakthrough win after winless starts. Not only that, but it is homecoming week for West, which is still looking for its first win on the new field. East is still looking for its first win under second-year head coach Shane McNally (0-13 record to date). It is also the conference opener for both teams. While West is 0-4, their three opponents are a combined 12-4 so far. East’s last win over West came Oct. 12, 2012. The two teams have played each year since 1997 and West is 26-3 in that time over East. An odd note is the teams didn’t meet until 1975, but they have faced off in all but 7 years since 1975.
