In San Diego, California, “twelve individuals are facing federal fraud charges after an investigation revealed that more than $10 million intended to help low-income families pay for childcare was instead funneled to bogus daycare providers,” the federal Department of Justice announced Tuesday. The defendants are:

Fosiya Mohamoud, 50, of El Cajon originally from Somalia; Abdulrahman Alawad, 25, from Syria; Zetun Abdi, 43, from Somalia; Ikramullah Mohmmand, 25, from Afghanistan; Khetam Haouash, 37, from Syria; Khatera Hashimi, 39, from Afghanistan: Mariam Khamis, 42, from Sudan; Mohamad Alawad, 29, from Syria; Mazin Alawad, 22, from Syria; Turkiya Alawad, 63, from Syria; Zaryab Daudzai, 25, from Afghanistan; and Cezar Yaqoob, 36, who hails from Iraq.

The DOJ describes the defendants as “naturalized U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents,” but some were not even in the country when they submitted claims for childcare...
