YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK (KFSN) -- The Dome Fire burning in Yosemite National Park continued to grow Saturday, reaching 2,391 acres and 15% containment as firefighters worked for a third consecutive night to contain the blaze in steep and challenging terrain.
The fire started Tuesday morning near Wawona Dome inside the park and has nearly doubled in size since Thursday. A total of 497 personnel have responded to the incident, including crews operating under California Incident Management Team 3, a multi-agency team that assists with wildfire response through operations, logistics, finance and public information functions.
Fire officials said rugged terrain, heavy smoke and hazardous conditions continue to challenge firefighting efforts.
"Our firefighters are working in a tremendous amount of smoke; the work is in very difficult terrain. There are dead trees that have fall potential. There are also a lot of bears in the area," said Devin Young, Public Information Officer for California Incident Management Team 3.
Nine helicopters are assisting with suppression efforts, providing critical support in areas that are difficult for ground crews to access.
