Former Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin will not play in either of the club's first two games of the regular season, as confirmed by head coach Todd McLellan.
The Detroit Red Wings are just over 24 hours away from opening their regular-season schedule against the New York Rangers, and they remain without two key pieces of their roster.
Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, still an unsigned RFA despite participating in training camp, has returned to his native Sweden to continue training while his representation works to finalize a deal.
Meanwhile, former captain Dylan Larkin, who sustained an upper-body injury during an off-ice training session, has officially been ruled out of Detroit's first two games by head coach Todd McLellan.
Larkin has been skating with the team over the past several days, mostly working as an extra forward during drills rather than participating in line rushes.
Although his status for Friday's opener remained uncertain, McLellan confirmed Thursday morning that Larkin will miss both the matchup with the Rangers and Sunday's matinee against the Winnipeg Jets, and the "hope" is that he'll be able to return for Tuesday's game against the Ottawa Senators.
