Economist Highlights the Habit-Forming Nature of Trump's Tariff Revenues

Recent data reveals that the substantial income generated from President Donald Trump's tariffs poses a challenge for future administrations—regardless of political affiliation—who might consider removing them, according to a report by The New York Times. An economist has even described this new revenue source as "addictive."
By July, the United States amassed $152 billion in customs duties and specific excise taxes, nearly doubling the $78 billion collected during the same period in 2024. If maintained, projections suggest tariff revenues could surpass $2 trillion over the next ten years.
Joao Gomes, an economist at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, commented, "This revenue stream is quite compelling. When facing substantial debt and deficits, it becomes difficult to eliminate such income sources."
Even a future Democratic administration might find it challenging to oppose these revenues.
