“Singular” does not accurately represent the Latino community, as defined by Alicia Moreno, director of Student Inclusion and Belonging at Trinity University.
El Mercado, a celebration of the start of Hispanic Heritage Month hosted by the Office of Student Inclusion and Belonging on Sept. 16, sought to highlight this diversity within the Latino community. El Mercado welcomed the month-long celebration of Hispanic and broader Latino culture and history, bringing together members of the San Antonio and Trinity community to interact with local artisans, vendors, non-profit organizations, a DJ and student organizations supporting Latino communities.
“[El Mercado] is a lively celebratory event to highlight and acknowledge the Latinx community,” Moreno said. “Knowing we’re in the city of San Antonio, it’s a celebration of that as well as an opportunity to highlight the various cultures that live within the umbrella of Latinx culture.”
Moreno said she finds it important to acknowledge and represent the various countries and identities that make up the Latino community. She said that oftentimes, many communities get lumped and gathered under one umbrella term.
