As summer brings higher temperatures and humidity, proper skin care becomes increasingly important. Dr. Vicky Ren, a dermatologist and associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine, answered common questions regarding summer skin health.
Dr. Ren advises applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 fifteen minutes before outdoor activities, regardless of cloud cover. She emphasizes that sun protection indoors is also essential if you're near windows or inside a vehicle, as UVA rays can penetrate glass. For added protection against visible light, which can contribute to skin aging and pigmentation, tinted sunscreens containing iron oxide are recommended, even indoors.
For individuals commuting by car regularly, Dr. Ren notes uneven sun exposure can occur: "UVA rays accelerate skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. If one side of your face is more exposed through a window, it may show more signs of sun damage and aging."
