MAYVILLE, N.D. — Matthew Donovan, who suffered a severe head injury during a college football game here on Sept. 19, was able to cough on his own, the quarterback’s father said in a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.
“Today we got a few of those little victories that don’t sound like much until you’ve lived through the last several days,” Terry Donovan wrote.

Mayville State’s Matthew Donovan was involved in a helmet-to-helmet hit in the third quarter of Saturday’s game against Simpson University (California) in a game at Jerome Berg Field. He was life-flighted to a Fargo hospital and underwent a two-hour surgery on his brain. He was in a medically-induced coma.
Terry Donovan also wrote on Wednesday that medical staff also irritated his son’s eye and Matthew tried to blink in response. “Both were positive reactions,” Terry wrote, “and we’ll take every one of them.”
A former multi-sport standout at Kasson-Mantorville High School in southeast Minnesota, Matthew Donovan is a 5-foot-10, 176-pound redshirt junior. He spent his freshman season with Bemidji State before transferring.
