Nash Central was on the way to its first win of the season when held a two-touchdown lead on Southern Nash with just over nine minutes to play in Friday’s nonconference game between the Nash County rivals.
The Firebirds, however, rallied with two scores in the remaining time to deny the Bulldogs 28-27 at home.
Nash Central dropped to 0-4 overall but showed some promise offensively after collecting just eight points through their first three outings (the last two shutouts). Southern Nash improved to 2-2 overall.
The Firebirds got on the scoreboard first when D.J. Baker went 76 yards for a touchdown with 1:29 left in the first quarter and Brayden Wells kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the score on a 34-yard TD run from Elijah Dunn and an extra point from Jason Lagos with 32.9 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Firebirds regained the lead on another Baker TD (two yards), and Wells’ PAT made it 14-7 with 43.7 seconds before halftime.
Nash Central used a big pass from Emory Bynum to Aiden Parks to set up a 33-yard TD pass from Bynum to Tristian Whitley on the final play of the first half. Lagos tied it with his second extra point.
