Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has recently opposed Amendment 1, which would significantly increase the cap on the state’s budget stabilization fund. The decision was at odds with what was previously backed by Florida’s Republican Party, which caused many residents to be skeptical about whether DeSantis was really against the measure or if the move was entirely performative.
As reported by NBC Miami, the amendment proposes to increase Florida’s budget stabilization fund from 10% to 25% of the previous year’s general fund revenue. While the measure is supported by the party, the Republican governor called it “foolish” and argued that the state already has enough reserves. In opposition to that, the Florida GOP argued that the fund would help the state handle hurricanes and other emergencies.
Should Amendment 1 pass on the ballot, it would require lawmakers to deposit up to $750 million annually until the 25% cap is reached. For the amendment to pass, it would need to receive 60% voter approval.
