Geoff Duncan, who previously served as Georgia's Republican Lieutenant Governor, has officially changed his political affiliation to Democrat, citing disagreements over key issues such as Medicaid expansion, immigration policies, and gun regulations.
In an opinion piece published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday, Duncan announced his party switch and hinted at a possible bid for higher office under the Democratic banner.
"My journey to becoming a Democrat began long before Donald Trump contested the 2020 election results in Georgia. There isn't a specific date or event that marked the moment my political views shifted, but the change has been ongoing," Duncan explained.
Duncan gained prominence among Georgia Republicans after defeating an underdog candidate in the 2018 primary runoff for lieutenant governor and winning the general election. His stance started to diverge from party lines in 2020 when he publicly rejected Trump's false claims of victory in Georgia's presidential race.
