Orlando Magic's Contract Extension for Paolo Banchero
The Orlando Magic swiftly secured their promising young star, Paolo Banchero, with a five-year, $239 million maximum rookie contract extension this summer. Banchero's performance since his 2022 debut underscores his value, yet debates about the appropriateness of his hefty deal persist.
Criticism from NBA Analyst John Hollinger
Recently, John Hollinger, a former Memphis Grizzlies VP of basketball operations and NBA analyst, voiced criticism of the Magic's contract terms for Banchero. In an article for The Athletic, Hollinger expressed skepticism about whether Banchero truly warrants a maximum contract.
"Banchero is a talented player, but I have concerns about this deal," Hollinger stated. "Primarily, my BORD$ model isn't entirely convinced he's a max player."
He pointed out that the contract includes an immediate escalator to 30% of the salary cap, contingent on certain accolades like third-team All-NBA, paralleling deals given to Cade Cunningham and Evan Mobley last year. Hollinger argued that a more cautious approach might have been preferable.
