Gary Oldman is a dab hand at a gritty thriller, backed up by standout performances in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy , True Romance , and Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. However, it's certainly a welcome change when he takes on something equally explosive that's a little... lighter in tone.
RoboCop , the 2014 remake of the Paul Verhoeven classic, is a perfect example of that – though it doesn't quite have the same brutally campy brilliance of the original, it's a modern update to a much-loved franchise that does the original justice. And, of course, Oldman is brilliant.
What is RoboCop about? Set in the near future (that's now alarmingly close) of 2028, RoboCop follows Detective Alex Murphy, whose body is reconstructed after a near-fatal injury. After he is turned into a cyborg police officer, complications arise surrounding the balance between his humanity and efficiency as an officer. What ensues is Murphy's battle against corruption within the company that created him, within the local police force, and a fight for his bodily and emotional autonomy.
