Zoey Kantzavelos has come a long way in a short time.
Yet the Burlington High School freshman cross country runner has a long way to go.
Kantzavelos is going places is a hurry. She finished fourth in her first race at the Burlington Regional RecPlex during the annual Tony Proctor Invitational on Thursday.
Kantzavelos crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 17 seconds, inching ever closer to breaking the 20-minute barrier and accomplished her goal of finishing ahead of Notre Dame-West Burlington senior Kaitlyn Kipp.
And the best part is Kantzavelos just keeps getting better, and faster.
"I was happy about it. That was one of my better races I've had this season. I can't complain,” Kantzavelos said. "I wanted to stay with the girls ahead of me. I wanted to stay with (Notre Dame-West Burlington’s) Hannah Ritter because she's fast. Iron sharpens iron. I wanted to stay with her."
Clear Creek-Amana’s Ali Seidl won the individual title in 19:09. Teammate Keira Cooney was second in 19:34, while Ritter was third in 20:02. Kipp took fifth in 20:30.
