A comprehensive global analysis conducted by researchers at University College London (UCL) reveals that individuals exhibiting early signs of dementia often face a substantial delay—averaging approximately 3.5 years—before receiving an official diagnosis. In cases of early-onset dementia, the diagnostic delay can extend up to 4.1 years, hindering timely access to necessary treatments and support systems. Published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, this pioneering study systematically reviews data from 13 research efforts across Europe, the United States, Australia, and China, encompassing over 30,000 participants. The investigation primarily examines the interval between initial symptom recognition—such as memory lapses or confusion—and formal diagnosis by healthcare professionals. Findings indicate that many individuals endure prolonged periods before diagnosis, sometimes spanning several years.
