GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks Public Schools Superintendent Terry Brenner has announced his intent to retire at the end of this school year. His last day will be June 30, 2027.
Brenner's retirement comes after 44 years in public education, 37 in leadership and nine as superintendent, according to a letter submitted to the Grand Forks School Board on Monday, Sept. 28.

He hopes an announcement early in the year will give ample time to consider steps to conduct a search for his replacement.
Brenner called the decision "one of the most difficult and reflective decisions of my personal life."
"I realize that I am not simply leaving a job. I am closing a chapter of my life that has shaped, in part, who I am," he wrote in his letter.
He got his start in his native Devils Lake, where he was an elementary school principal and teacher. He arrived at the Grand Forks district in 1995, and in his time in Grand Forks has worked as the principal of Carl Ben Eielson Elementary School and Wilder Elementary School, as the district's director of curriculum and instruction, and as an adjunct assistant professor at UND. He has been superintendent since 2018.
