GRAND FORKS — A mentor teacher with Grand Forks Public Schools’ Virtual High School is joining dozens of other teachers around the country in an effort to improve how AI is used in the classroom.
Kristy Sandbeck, who has been with GFPS for more than 30 years, was named to the Mark Cuban Foundation Teacher Fellowship last week. The program will see her working with educators from all subject areas to evaluate and develop best practices regarding AI.

“We can’t forget the human intelligence, that’s something that’s so important to understand,” Sanbeck told the Grand Forks Herald. “AI is out there, but we can’t rely on it the whole time.”
Cuban, the billionaire angel investor and host of ABC’s “Shark Tank,” has shifted the focus of his foundation to AI in recent years. He started a series of AI bootcamp events for high school students in 2019, and the teacher fellowship in 2025.
The bootcamps are an opportunity for students to learn how to use AI tools responsibly. Sandbeck will run one locally sometime next year.
