Grassfire near Cache prompts evacuations, multi-agency response

Lawn mower spark blamed for fire that burned several building

CACHE, Okla. — Fire crews from several departments spent the afternoon fighting a grassfire near Cache.

Comanche County–Lawton Emergency Management said the fire started just after noon when a lawn mower sparked a blaze that burned several buildings and forced people nearby to evacuate for a while.

Firefighters from multiple agencies moved in quickly and worked to bring the fire under control. Crews worked together to extinguish the fire in heavy fuel and difficult terrain. The fire is under control, with units working on hot spots throughout the area.

Units on scene include Cache Fire, Pecan Creek Fire, Indiahoma Fire, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office, federal wildlife law enforcement, Cache Police Department, emergency management and the Western District.

Officials are asking people to use caution when doing anything that could cause a spark or fire to start. Anyone who sees smoke or flames is asked to call 911 immediately.
