Greenwood County and Redtail Renewables announced a long-term partnership to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) project at the Greenwood County Landfill. The announcement follows Redtail Renewables’ acquisition of VRNG Greenwood LLC, the company developing the facility in a transaction that closed in late July.
Under long-term agreements with Greenwood County, Redtail will assume responsibility for investing in and operating the landfill’s gas collection system and will develop a facility to capture landfill methane — a potent greenhouse gas — and upgrade it into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas for use as a low-carbon transportation fuel.
“This partnership is an important investment in Greenwood County and the long-term stewardship of our landfill,” said Greenwood County Council Chairman Theo Lane. “By capturing landfill gas and putting it to productive use, we’re turning a resource that would otherwise be lost into an environmental benefit and lasting value for our community.
