Work is underway to raise about 16 acres of a former BAE Systems site in the Town of Union above the floodplain to prepare the property for future industrial development.
The 27-acre property at 600 Main St. has been vacant since 2011. Work will create a build-ready development pad, with infrastructure in place, for a future industrial user.
The start of construction was marked by a “ground-raising” event hosted by The Agency, the regional economic development organization. Details about the construction schedule and cost were not provided in the announcement.
The property, formerly known as Air Force Plant 59, was used by Remington Rand to manufacture aluminum aircraft propellers during the Second World War before General Electric took over operations in 1949, producing aircraft control systems and other military components. BAE Systems later operated the facility, which was severely damaged by flooding in September 2011. The U.S. Air Force subsequently demolished the approximately 620,000-square-foot building.
