Hamburg Pioneers Sustainable Cruise Operations with Shore Power Implementation by 2027 The Port of Hamburg is taking a leading role in environmental initiatives within Europe by establishing comprehensive shore power facilities for cruise ships, surpassing the European Union's 2030 standards. The port has prioritized the development of shore power infrastructure, initially focusing on cruise vessels and gradually extending to cargo ships, to ensure ships can connect to clean, land-based electricity while docked. By 2026, all cruise terminals at Hamburg will be equipped with shore power connections. Currently, the Altona and Steinwerder terminals are operational, with the HafenCity terminal scheduled to be fully equipped and operational next year, following ongoing installation and testing. Cruise ships must meet specific certification criteria and have compatible onboard systems to utilize these facilities.
