Hersey football improved to 6-0 this season before a snap was taken Friday, Sept. 25 after Wheeling announced they have to forfeit the game due to low numbers.
Wheeling had a smaller roster this season and a number of injuries over the last month forced the Wildcats to forfeit their game against Hersey. Wheeling is currently last in the MSL East, dropping to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the MSL East.
The Wildcats have been outscored 218-20 this season through the first five weeks and they were scheduled to face undefeated Hersey this week and fellow undefeated squad Prospect Friday, Oct. 2.
Hersey is outscoring its opponents 216-63 this season.
Last year Hersey won 62-0, which followed a 61-0 win over Wheeling in 2024. The Huskies won 52-7 in 2023, 49-0 in 2022, 42-18 in 2021, 41-20 in 2020 and 78-20 in 2019. Hersey also won in 2018 (41-16) and 2017 (35-0), before Wheeling’s last win in 2016 (40-7).
With nine straight wins over Wheeling and likely a 10th straight win Friday, it wasn’t worth the risk for the Wildcats to play and risk even more injuries.
