Horse Lords, Barreleye hypnotize concertgoers at PYGMALION Day 4

Funky guitar swells and heavy distortion filled Gallery Art Bar on Sunday as Barreleye and Horse Lords performed for the final night of PYGMALION.

Both bands brought an experimental feel to the stage, incorporating unique tuning styles and prolonged sequences, often transitioning from one song into the next.

Barreleye, an experimental art-rock band formed out of the Urbana DIY show scene, played music from its debut album, “One Eye Glitters,” including “Call Me,” “Dancer” and “Swip,” an 18-minute long track.

During Barreleye’s opening set, imagery of firefighters putting out fires across acres of forests and wheat fields projected onto the walls of the venue. The setting added a potent visual to the band’s glittery, grungy midwest-emo sound.

When Horse Lords took the stage at 9 p.m., the projections on the walls shifted to psychedelic imagery, including a cosmic planet pattern, a swimming jellyfish across an ocean background and several other mind-bending images.
