In 2007, a significant weather event dramatically transformed my farming practices. During our typical spring tillage, a sudden one-inch rainfall occurred, and later that evening, I noticed soil from our fields on the road while driving, indicating erosion issues. This prompted me to explore sustainable soil management techniques like cover cropping and no-till farming to enhance soil health.
I experimented by applying no-till methods on half of a 200-acre field with a radish cover crop, while the other half remained under conventional tillage. Harvest results showed that the no-till, cover crop section yielded the best crop performance and offered the highest return on investment. This experience convinced me of the benefits of cover crops, leading to their widespread adoption across my farm.
Over the past 18 years, my operation has evolved from traditional tillage to a fully sustainable system: now practicing no-till farming, planting cover crops, cultivating non-GMO crops, and ultimately transitioning to organic farming.
This journey requires patience—typically at least five years—to effectively reduce input reliance. My key advice to fellow farmers is to avoid risking their ...
