A recent peer-reviewed research indicates that Idaho has experienced a significant reduction in its OB-GYN medical professionals, losing over a third of its practitioners in the past two years. This decline correlates with the enforcement of the state's rigorous abortion restrictions.
The study reports that out of 268 OB-GYN physicians, 114 have either relocated, retired, or ceased practicing within the state, leading to a 35% decrease since 2022. Rural communities are disproportionately impacted, with only 23 OB-GYNs serving approximately 570,000 residents outside Idaho's major urban counties.
Physician surveys included in the study reveal that concerns over legal repercussions related to abortion legislation are a primary factor motivating many to leave the profession or relocate.
